Our Story

Out here in Oregon, we're used to getting things done - you could call it our pioneering spirit. It's just how we do things. It's the reason Tim Leatherman built his first multi-purpose tool, and why Leatherman Tool Group has made a promise to our community to stay local. Why? Well, we're proud to support U.S. workers who are dedicated to the quality craftsmanship that goes into each of our original American multi-tools, just like our founder.

Our Founder

After spending his childhood in Oregon, Tim Leatherman stayed local and received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State University. Time spent traveling abroad - which included staying at hostels and driving an untrustworthy $300 Fiat - convinced Tim of the need for a pliers based, multi-purpose tool. "I was carrying an old Boy Scout-type knife and used it for everything from slicing bread to making adjustments to the car. But I kept wishing I had a pair of pliers!"

The Mother of Invention

Established in Portland, 1983

Back home in the states, Tim set to work developing and patenting his idea. Shortly after his return he partnered with college friend Steve Berliner to continue building concepts and reaching out to potential prospects for sales. On July 5, 1983 Tim and Steve officially incorporated Leatherman Tool Group, Inc. based on a few simple, but fundamental principles: manufacture the highest quality products that deliver excellent value to the consumer, while providing good, living-wage jobs to the local workforce. It was in that same year, after nearly a decade of knocking on doors and perfecting his idea, that they sold the very first Pocket Survival Tool (PST). And as the story goes...the rest is history.

30 Years Later

A Family of Doers

Thirty years later we're still going strong in the U.S. crafting the famous multi-tools and knives that can endure just about anything and come back to work tomorrow. Although Tim is now retired, his American spirit of ingenuity, innovation and quality craftsmanship still thrives in all of us. When asked about the company's devotion to quality, Tim always replies, "It has to be perfect; my name is on every tool."

At Leatherman, we're a group of fixers, outdoor enthusiasts, former service members, adventure seekers and just plain doers. And we know our products will stand the test of time because we count on them ourselves every day. Our mission is to inspire and prepare Leatherman owners for the expected - and unexpected - that inevitably will come their way. Every multi-tool and knife we ship out the door is crafted by one of the 700 Oregonians who call Leatherman a great place to work, and we stand behind our products with a no-questions-asked 25 year warranty.

The Birth of a Multi-Tool

We invite you to see firsthand where your Leatherman tool was crafted at one of our weekly tours, or view our timeline of tools right here on our website. We're proud to live and work in the USA and it shows in every multi-tool and knife we make. Leatherman. Leave nothing undone.

    Blast

Loaded with our most requested features, the Leatherman Blast is ready for work. Longer blades mean easier slicing, sawing, filing and more, while Zytel® handle inserts provide a comfortable, reliable grip. New designs for the handles and pliers help Blast sustain more than double the squeezing load of the original PST. With the Blast, even small hands can get themselves around the biggest jobs comfortably.

    Fuse

The Leatherman Fuse features an all-blade locking system that is 50% stronger than our original locks, with a one-at-a-time blade selection that gets you just the tool you want. With a slim chassis and an assortment of the most-needed tools, the Fuse is perfect for smaller hands, putting portability and functionality at the forefront.

    Kick

Efficiency is the name of the game with the Leatherman Kick. Thoughtful engineering means blades are longer, sharper, and stronger. A tapped screw allows you to choose a pocket clip (sold separately) instead of a belt sheath. The Kick has the same super-strong pliers as larger Leatherman tools, but with a narrow shape and light weight. The Kick is perfect for smaller hands with big jobs to do.

  • Surge

The Leatherman Surge is one of our two largest multi-tools; a real powerhouse, built with our largest pliers, longest multi-tool blades and easy-to-use locks. A unique blade exchanger, large and small bit drivers and four outside-opening blades give you quick access to the tools you use most. The Surge was built for tough jobs and the hands that do them.

    Core

The Leatherman Core is the ultimate tool for your toughest jobs. One of two Leatherman 4.5" tools, the Core has our most powerful pliers, longer blades, and easy-to-use locks. C, E, K and H-Series Knives

In 2005 Leatherman introduced their first series of pocket knives. There were two types of steel used in these models and two different frame sizes. The K and H series knives were larger with a 3.1” blade and the C and E series knives smaller with a 2.8” blade. The K and E series knives had premium 154CM stainless steel blades and the C and H models had regular 420HC stainless steel. There were various features across all models including carabiners that could be stowed in the handle to bit drivers with multiple bits or fixed screwdrivers in different sizes. These knives were some of the first on the market to incorporate tool-like features into a standard pocket knife frame.

Hunters rejoice! (Retired 2009)

    Charge TTi

When we made the Leatherman Charge TTi, we knew the Charge AL and ALX were just too hard to beat, so we didn't even try. Instead we simply combined them. But we had to give the TTi its own claim to fame, so in addition to all the other Charge features, we gave the TTi premium comfort-sculpted titanium handle scales and the S30V® stainless steel clip-point knife. Who says a multi-tool can't be sexy?

    Charge AL

The Leatherman Charge AL includes scissors that slice through just about anything, with beveled edges that allow them to get extra close to whatever you're cutting. Bit drivers for versatility, diamond-coated files for detailed work, and a 154CM clip-point knife are all housed in 6061-T6, hard-anodized aluminum alloy handles. The Charge AL takes the idea of a multi-tool up a notch.

    Charge ALX

The Leatherman Charge ALX swaps out the Charge AL scissors for an aggressive cutting hook on the back of the serrated blade. Rip through tough materials like seatbelts, linoleum and leather with no problem. Get your hands around the Charge ALX's unbeatable ergonomic grip, outside-accessible blades and premium materials like 154CM and 6061-T6, anodized aluminum.

  • Hunting Knives

The hunting knives were named after well-known areas for hunting in the Northwest—the Steens, Klamath, Nehalem and Ukiah wilderness areas. The Steens® and Klamath® knives featured premium S30V® stainless steel blades and rosewood inlay handles. The Nehalem® and Ukiah® had 154CM stainless steel blades and glass-filled Nylon handles. The Steens and Nehalem knives featured a rotating handle that would either expose a full-size gut hook, or full-size, fixed-blade knife. (Retired 2009)

  • Skeletool

At a mere five ounces, the Leatherman Skeletool has a stainless steel combo blade, pliers, bit driver, removable pocket clip and carabiner/bottle opener. The Skeletool is just what you need in one good lookin' package.

    Skeletool CX

The sleek new Leatherman Skeletool CX gets you back to basics... very cool basics. The Skeletool CX has only the most necessary of multi-tool features, because sometimes that's all you need. With a 154CM stainless steel blade, pliers, bit driver, pocket clip and carabiner/bottle opener, you're set. Lightweight, low volume, perfect size.

The Leatherman Genus landscaping tool will have you rotating your thinking. This new pruner multi-tool features an industry-first: a rotating handle that stores a full set of professional tools. Just push the button and flip the handle around and you'll find a knife, Phillips screwdriver, sprinkler head adjustment tool/flat screwdriver, bottle opener and very aggressive saw. The Genus is simply genius. (Retired 2009)

    Serac Lights

The Serac line of LED lights, quite simply, had one of the best size-to-performance ratios on the market during its time. There were three models in all, the S1, S2 and S3. All had hard-anodized bodies and stainless steel bezels. The S2 and S3 had multiple functions and textured aluminum reflectors for clean light with no distracting lines. All three models were IPX8 rated. (Retired 2010)

    Crater and Expanse Knives

The Crater line of folding knives was designed to be lighter and more streamlined than the original 300 and 500 series knives. The "C" indicates "Crater" series and the "33" or "55" means a medium or large blade. These knives used 420HC stainless steel for blade material and extremely strong, glass-filled nylon for the handle. With a dull blade, a knife is more of a paperweight than a tool. That's why the blades in the Expanse series are crafted from 154CM stainless steel; to keep their edge three times as long as regular stainless steel. Just like the Crater knives, the Expanse models have several integrated features that turn an amazing knife into an amazing tool. From screwdrivers to carabiners and bit drivers, these knives are not just sharp, they're extremely versatile.

  • Super Tool 300

The award-winning, Leatherman Super Tool 300 is the multi-tool for the working man. Larger pliers are the strongest we've ever produced and the sloped-top handle design means you can maneuver them further into tight spaces. When you're working with gloves on, the large side cutouts make it easy to still grab components and rolled handles make for a comfortable grip. Stranded, hard and regular wire cutters all come standard on Super Tool 300, and because they're removable you can repair or re-sharpen on the spot. 19 tools all ready for your toughest jobs. Super Tool 300 is back from vacation and ready to get to work.

    Freestyle

The first thing you'll probably notice with the Leatherman Freestyle is opening the outside-accessible blade is easy and fast, just like a pocket knife. When you unfold it and use the pliers you'll understand that when something is engineered correctly, power isn't a matter of size, but a matter of years of design expertise. Freestyle is great as a stand-alone tool or a companion for those activity-specific tools that don't feature pliers or a knife.

    Freestyle CX

This little knife/tool hybrid is packing one heck of a material list. To start, the Leatherman Freestyle CX features DLC coating for scratch and corrosion resistance, making it great for those adventures that really put your gear to the test. Next the premium 154CM knife blade holds its edge three-times as long as traditional stainless steel. And finally with its powerful jaws, outside-accessible blade, and removable pocket clip, you can use it like a pocket knife, or a multi-tool. And while those last features aren't really 'materials,' we think you'll agree flexibility and adaptability are pretty much priceless any way you look at it.

    Monarch Lights

Monarch was Leatherman’s second (and last) line of LED lights before the parent company, Leatherman Tool Group, Inc., bought LED Lenser from Germany. There were four models in this line, the 200, 300, 400 and 500, all simple on/off ranging from 16-100 lumens. They had machined aluminum bodies and bezels and were rated IPX4. (Retired 2011)

As time went on it became so popular and people (as with most Leatherman tools) found it to be so handy for all kinds of jobs, we opened up distribution to all kinds of stores nationwide. Now called the Squirt ES4 we added scissors to the tool making it even more versatile.

    OHT

For years multi-tool users could choose from two distinct options when it came to a "one-hand-operable" multi-tool: one-hand-opening pliers OR one-hand-opening blades. Today, Leatherman has taken these two well-loved ideas and fused them into the first ever, 100% one-hand-operable multi-tool, the Leatherman OHT. This industry-first tool features spring-loaded pliers and wire-cutters so you don't tire your hand adjusting and readjusting your grip. Z-Rex

There are other glass breakers and strap cutters on the market, but Z-Rex is the first one to pull together all the one-off features into one lightweight, intuitive and comfortable-to-use tool. Replaceable and indexible V-notch cutters can simply be flipped around for a fresh edge on-the-spot, or replaced completely when you're back home. Two wrenches—oxygen and Hex—are built right into the body of the tool; and, while other companies use stainless steel that takes much more force (if it even works at all) we use one-strike, Tungsten Carbide for our glass breaker tool. After all, if you're down to breaking glass, this is not the time to be beating your fist against the window.
